Match small bait without losing casting distance

Downsize the profile first, then preserve weight and control with the right tackle combination.

When predators focus on tiny forage, a large lure can be ignored even when the color is correct. Choose a compact metal jig, small bucktail, soft plastic or slender hard bait that matches the visible profile. A heavier compact lure can still cast well from a beach or boat without appearing oversized in the water.

Use a lighter leader when conditions allow and retrieve at the speed of the forage. If fish follow without striking, change cadence before changing color: add a pause, a short burst or a controlled fall while keeping the lure inside the feeding zone.
