Palomar knot

Hooks, swivels and lures with braid or mono

    Double 6 inches of line and pass the loop through the eye.

  2. 2

    Tie a loose overhand knot with the hook hanging below.

  3. 3

    Pass the loop over the entire hook or lure.

  4. 4

    Wet the line, pull both ends evenly and trim the tag.

    Pass the line through the eye and make 5–7 wraps.

    Form a loop and wrap the tag through it 5–7 times.

    Wet and pull the tag to tighten the wraps.

    Keep the leader under firm tension.

  2. 2

    Weave the braid alternately over and under the leader 18–22 times.

  3. 3

    Lock with alternating half hitches.

  4. 4

    Trim the leader close and finish with several tight half hitches.

Shorts are preferred and every player starts muted. Every demonstration matches the named knot and is capped at three minutes. Always wet mono or fluorocarbon before seating, tighten slowly, inspect the finished knot and test it firmly before fishing.

Boat, beach and dock fundamentals

From a boat

  • Start trolling lures around 5–7 knots, then adjust to keep each lure swimming correctly.
  • Use S-turns to make inside lures slow and outside lures accelerate.
  • Work birds, bait, temperature breaks, weed lines, current edges and bottom structure.

From the beach

  • Read troughs, cuts, points, sandbars and changes in water color.
  • Fan-cast near, middle and far water before walking.
  • Use only enough weight to hold bottom or maintain lure action.

From a dock

  • Fish the up-current side of pilings, lights and shade lines.
  • Use controlled casts and enough drag to stop fish entering structure.
  • Use a landing net; never lift a heavy fish by the line.
